Terremoto (Earthquake)

F¡rst thing´s first, we are fine. Second thing´s second, we felt what was registered as a 7.5 earthquake off the coast of central peru. I don´t know how far the epicenter was from us in Arequipa, but I know it was much closer to lima which is about 600 miles away from us. Nonetheless, as we sat around making "wash mits" for Deedra´s patients, we felt a distinct shaking of our house. The indoor plants swayed to and fro, and we sat there for what seemed like 20 - 30 seconds discussing that this must be a pretty large earthquake. It is too early to tell what the damage may be, if any, but our house stood the shaking just fine. I don´t want to take any credit for the quake, but this now makes my pariticipation in above 7.0 earthquakes climb to grand total of 3. I am somewhat of an earthquake magnet it seems. We´ll keep you posted on further details.

Regarding our work here, I had an opportunity to do a question and answer session the other day with about 30 women workers who had pediatric questions. I thought it went well, and it was very eye-opening, as it directed our attention at what the true concerns of the local folks are. Deedra has come up with new ideas for the clinic, which seem like they would be fairly easy to implement, and are making the staff excited. We took a shopping trip the other day to find materials so we could make the above mentioned wash mits for her patients. These are washcloths sewn together (yes, I was helping to sew), with velcro straps at the bottom. They are used for those who have little control of their hands for when they are bathing, as the mits are much more easy to manipulate than the patient´s own fingers and hands. We both give presentations to about 150 families tomorrow night. I will be talking about nutrition and obesity (surprise) and Deedra will be discussing how to prevent work-related injuries.

That´s all for now, thanks again for all of your replies, we check our blog daily (sometimes more).

Hope this finds everyone well,
Love,
Beau & Deedra

Beau and Deedra,
I had just run to my computer to check the proximity of the earthquake to you all,and imagine my surprise when you had already posted your message! So glad you guys and the town you are in is okay. Hoping that around the epicenter is doing okay as well. If you could not cause a major over 7.0 earthquake up at the wedding in Carmel...that would be great :) The earth will already be shaking enough! Sounds like you guys are making a serious difference in people's lives. So important to focus on what can be done (sewing and velcroing wash cloths together) instead of what can't be done (lowering the cost of medicines, etc...). Those are the little things that can lead to major changes. I hope your talk to the families goes well; I'm sure it will. We miss you guys and look forward to seeing you in a couple weeks. Love, Danielle (almost) Weill

I have to echo everyone else's sentiment. So glad you were speedy on your post. Very good to know that you are OK. What was the third over 7.0 you were in Beau? Northridge? Anyway, please stop whatever it is you're doing :) but keep up the good work with the patients!

Sending you both lots of love from the Bozone household.

Sweet B&D-

I was talking to Ughetta last night and we both had our moment of concern, but so happy to pull up on the blog to know you are happy and healthy and truly making a difference for the people around you. I can't imagine being up in Portland right now without you two there. Adjusting to SoCal life again. Did a sunset bikeride and swim in the Pacific. Ok, so it is not so bad, but it sure is brown!
Thanks for keeping all of us here posted.
Be safe, take it all in, share, love, receive.
Love and light, Jamie xoxoxoxoxoox

Hello!

I was sitting at my desk and going through CNN.com like I usually do at work and I saw the news about the earthquake. I'm glad you guys are okay. The whole time I was reading the article, I kept trying to remember how far your town was from Lima.

Sounds like your clinic is doing wonderfully with all the ideas that you have ready to be implemented. With so many people in need around the world, you guys are an inspiring couple.

Back in CDRC,
Linda C.

Well, thank goodness you're OK! Matt and I missed you both in Portland and can't wait to see you when you get back - we'll have to plan a special trip. Here's a phrase for you - 'Esa mujer hermosa y inteligente es mi esposa' - 'that beautiful and intelligent woman is my wife.' use it to fight off hordes of amorous peruvians.

Hi Deedra...
As you can imagine we're all thinking about you here and we are very happy to hear you guys are ok. I just thought you'd find this interesting...Debbie called to find out how you were and if we heard from you yet. I told her that through your blog we were relieved to find out everything was fine. I guess Tyler, her and the rest of the family were watching CNN last night about the earthquake...Tyler watched and listened very closely and then turned to Debbie and said "PERU...Deedra's in Peru" She said everyone in the room was shocked. Debbie then proceeded to comfort him and explain how Peru is a very BIG country. Anyway, I thought you'd enjoy that.
We all miss you here at TSFK and we're glad to hear you and Beau are safe!
Katie

Hey guys,

So glad to hear that you guys are ok.
The time has passed so quickly and I'm selfishly awaiting your return - healthy with lots of stories and experiences to continue all of our education. All is well with me - surgery went as good as could be expected and I'm recuperating very comfortably in da beehive. Im sure that all the support from wonderful friends like you made the difference. Planning on a weekend celebration in Carmel...
